Nursing and Respite Care Home - Project update.

By the time you read this newsletter, both the building structure, and a large amount of the second fix will be complete.

Since the last newsletter the following has been completed :

Work should also be under way to paint the outside of the building and fence the site.

Financially a further £35,000 is still needed to complete the building.

A breakdown of costs involved includes:

Please visit our web site www.Romaniacare.com for up to date information of the work being done.

We hope to open the home in May 2004. Please join us in praying for the remaining financial needs.

Gifted with a paint brush??

Would you be interested in joining a team of volunteers to paint the inside of the home in the Autumn.
Dates yet to be finalised. Please contact Laurence, via the office, if you might be interested.

Fund Raising Event

More than 100 people enjoyed the “60’s and 70’s Night with Auction of promises” at Verulam School, St Albans on Saturday 22nd March 2003. The result was over £5000 for our work. Many thanks to the band as well as Nick and Judy Salisbury, and team, for all their hard work!

Even Dacia cars don’t last for ever!

It is said that only Dacia cars are suitable for Romanian roads, many of which are so rough that they shake a western car to bits.

In the last few months, the old Dacia being used by Paul Clark in Romania seems to have spent more time with a mechanic than on the road. In May it finally died!

We are in the process of buying a new Dacia pickup, which will have 5 seats as well as a covered area for carrying cargo. This vehicle will be more reliable and enable Paul to be mobile more of the time, as well as being very useful for the nursing home when it opens. The cost is just over £4,000. We are launching a separate appeal to find this money—if you would like to contribute please send donations to the office.

Relationship with the Orthodox Church

Our relationship with the Orthodox Church, especially in Clit, goes from strength to strength. Laurence met with the priest in early May and he will be taking an active part in leading the club this summer, as well as organising a programme of other activities to help the team experience Romanian village life.

Teams 2003

Please pray for those taking part in teams this summer.

July 19th to 26th in Clit.
This team will be based in the village of Clit where the floods were last summer, and where many of the shoeboxes were sent at Christmas. The main focus of this team will be to run a holiday club for village children and show the Jesus film.

July 26th to August 2nd in Fintinele.
This team will be based in Suceava. The team will run a holiday club each day, and some of the members will be involved improving the toilet facilities at the village school.

Team members :

Weeks 1 & 2 Week 1 only Week 2 only
Peter Halden Hazel Atkins Catherine Birchall
Laurence Garside Chrissie Blake Joan Mayo
Peter Jeffery Jenna Pickering John Mayo
Rebecca Jeffery   Carl Slater
Tom Salisbury   Vicky Slater
Paul Clark

Please pray for them - for safety in travel, good health, that they would convey something of God’s love to the children, and build strong relationships both within the team and with the local village people.

Family Foodbox Appeal 2003

You will notice from the title that we have decided to do something different this year for Christmas. We have thought and prayed long and hard about this, and have decided not to do shoe boxes this year. Instead we are going to send out foodboxes for Christmas.

Working with a Dutch organisation, we are able to send a box containing the following to Romania for just £12.50 : 2kg rice, 3kg sugar, 2ltr sunflower oil, 1 can beans, 2kg macaroni noodles, 500g margarine, 250g dried soup, 500g cocoa, 3kg washing powder, 2 pieces soap, 1 bottle shampoo.

We know some of you have really enjoyed collecting the bits and pieces to put into a shoe box. We are also aware that some people have spent much more than £12.50 on items to put into one! We do however feel that the food boxes will be of more use to really poor families, and each family will receive the same - the contents and value of a shoe box could be very different!

More details will be sent out about this new project after the summer holidays but in outline we will be asking you to send us a Christmas card (we will tell you what to write in it), with a cheque for £12.50, and we will do the rest. The closing date will also be later than last year, probably mid to late November.

It is possible to give by cash, cheque, CAF voucher, CharityCard and Give As You Earn.
