The hospital
initially opened in the early 1990's when Doctor Stefan Puscasu, founder
of Bethesda, was the village doctor. Conditions deteriorated over
the years due to inadequate funding for maintenance - one year the total
maintenance budget was only $25. When first visited by representatives
of Mid Herts Churches Romania Relief in November 1994, conditions were
poor and Dr Puscasu had moved on to be a surgeon in the Suceava County
Hospital.

 |
From 1994 until
1997 Mid Herts Churches Romania Relief undertook considerable refurbishment
and upgrading of facilities, in conjunction with the state health authority.
This included :
| 1995 |
Installation
of new boiler, central heating & hot water systems |
| 1996 |
Construction
of an extension to provide 3 consulting rooms in preparation for closure
of the State Dispensary and integration with the
hospital. |
| 1997 |
Provision
of new toilets and upgrading/refurbishment of wards |
|
 |
The
hospital was suddenly closed, without notice, in Summer 1997 as part of
cost cutting measures by the Romanian government. It was then taken
over by Bethesda, to be opened as one of the first charity hospitals
in Romania in February 1998. |
 |
Work
in conjunction with Mid Herts Churches Romania Relief continued to include
:
| 1998 |
Construction
of a new Kitchen, dining and day rooms. |
| 1999 |
Construction
of a second storey on the 1996 extension as well as re-roofing the
whole hospital. |
| 2000 |
Installation
of new well with pump and tanks to provide continuous running water
and a new waste water treatment system. |
